The
Amalfi Citrus-Fruit Processing Co-operative owns two plots of land
in Amalfi, both plots being used primarily for lemon growing. The
laboratory and warehouse are located on the first plot, which has
an area of 70,000 m2 and is completely divided into terraces. The
terraces extend along the hill that rises from the north side of Amalfi,
the area called the "Valle dei Mulini", up to the small
town of Pogerola, 350 m above sea level. The second plot of land,
from which the photograph for the most famous
postcard of Amalfi was taken, has a perfect climate and it is
here that all the varieties of citrus fruits, as well as the aromatic
herbs used for making the infusions, are grown. The total surface
area is approximately 5000 m2 and consists of terraces that extend
from the state road to the Amalfi cemetery, which is one of the city's
historical-artistic points of interest. There are trees growing on
this plot that were brought back from the Orient around 1000 B.C.
by Amalfi sailors returning from the crusades.
These trees are still producing marvellous, unique fruit.
